Twelve Questions for Event Design Success
The key to event design success is being able to understand and translate your client’s style, ideas and vision into something incredible that exceeds their expectations and imagination. Designing weddings and events starts with getting to know your clients. Having a solid grasp of who they are, what they like, what is important and where they shop is the foundation you will use to build the design ideas and style for the event.
Here are twelve questions to ask wedding clients before you start their event design:
1. “What are five words you would use to describe your wedding day?”
2. “What are your favorite colors?”
3. “What are your least favorite colors?”
4. “Where do you shop for clothes?”
5. “Where do you shop for home decor?”
6. “What are your hobbies and interests?”
7. “What are your top three priorities for the wedding?”
8. “What are your favorite flowers”
9. “What are your least favorite flowers?”
10. “How important are flowers and decor?”
11. “What are your favorite restaurants and types of food?”
12. “What type of music do you listen to?”
Knowing both the bride and the groom’s answers to these questions will give you the foundation to start your event design process. As you talk through these questions and answers with your brides and grooms, you will gain valuable insight into what they really want. Your next step may be to create inspiration boards, choose the color palette, create a design file or write style descriptions.

[…] 12 Questions for Event Design Success […]
Do you think someone without any design or styling experience should do a course before starting a wedding design business
Thanks for your comment Sese. Yes, that would be a good idea to take a course or get some experience before offering it as a service.

This is so great! I am just starting out and I have my first initial consultation tomorrow! I’m not going to lie, I’m pretty nervous! BUT this was the perfect start to my research! Thank you!
Good luck Kelsey!
I like to ask what hobbies or interests they have. For example, if they like photography I like to incorporate old cameras as props. One couple enjoyed canoeing so we were actually able to use a canoe and wooden paddles at their reception. It was so cute and personal. The key is making things personal. It is after all, a day for them, about them, and one they want to remember! Thanks for the great articles you share!
Great ideas Kat. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks so much for all the information. They’re all very useful

Thank you Barbara!
This is very helpful and very simple. Question do you do one on one help threw the computer ? Maybe email? I’m 21 years old and my dream is to be a wedding planner and I am very confused and have alot of questions:/
Thank you for your comment Melissa. Yes, you can certainly work with clients solely through email, phone and internet.
Wow thats great. thanks
These are all great questions. I also like to ask if there are any must-have elements (i.e., Mom’s mason jar collection, books, etc.). It helps when I’m thinking through their entire design to make sure to include those elements and ensure the other details work cohesively.
That is a great question to add Brit. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks so much! This is such useful information!
You are welcome Gina. Thank you for the comment!
Great article. In the past it has felt vague and sometimes confusing to do the event design part of planning a wedding. This helps me feel more prepared and structured in delving into what the Bride and Groom really like or want. Thanks!
Thank you Amber! Glad you are part of the community here.
