Radical Ways to Finance Your Full Time Event Business
Sure, you can work for years and build a solid savings before you quit your current job and pursue your event business full time. Or you can consider these creative ideas to make it happen faster:
Crowdsource Funding – Crowdsource funding occurs for many reasons, one of which could be the growth of your creative business to a full time career. Or, crowdsource funding could be just the resource you need to add new services to your business that need a little bit of financial help to get going.
Minimalism – Change your outlook on what makes you happy, consume less, get rid of clutter then enjoy the simplicity. While extreme minimalism may not be right for you, the simplicity of adapting this mindset just happens to save a lot of money which could help you work full time as an event planner much quicker than if you maintain a traditional consumer-driven lifestyle.
Barter and Share – Consider sharing business cards, studio space, marketing and referrals with another business owner. Perhaps there is a floral designer you know well or a corporate event planner who you could partner with to share business expenses, marketing and referrals. Not only can you cut costs, you are able to advertise for each other and reduce advertising costs while still maintaining your own business. You can also barter event planning services for what you need. For example, you could plan a holiday party for a law firm in exchange for legal advice and contracts for your business.
Freelance Your Current Skills – Lack of time to work ON your business is one of the toughest issues facing event planners who want to make the jump into a full time event planning career. Not only do you need to book clients, you have to build your business to the point where you can support yourself or your family. What marketable skill do you have that would allow you to work part time as a freelancer until your planning business grows to a full time income? For example, an accountant may quit her full time accounting job but take on 3-4 freelance accounting clients on her own until she can transition into full time event planning.
Find a Flexible Job – Flexjobs.com has legitimate job listings for flexible jobs including telecommuting and freelance jobs. Use this to find a new full time paid gig with some flexibility (i.e. which gives you more flexibility to plan events) or use it as another resource to find freelance work that can fund your event planning career transition.
What other creative ways can you use to quit your day job sooner?
