What is your typical day like?
After my morning coffee and walk with my two dogs, I try to start my day at 9am in my home office with emails to various clients and vendors. Typically, those emails lead to additional work, such as event timelines, room layouts, vision boards, etc. With everything I do leading to additional tasks, my morning can feel like a game of ping pong with my brain and attention bouncing from one task to the next and back again.
My husband usually wakes up around lunchtime (he works a graveyard shift), so that’s when I take a break to catch up with him and refuel my body for the afternoon. I spend the earlier part of my afternoon working on my business such as updating my Pinterest account and website, creating my social media content calendar for the next month, or outlining and writing blog posts. It always feels like there’s more that can be done!
By 4pm, I head to the gym to unwind from the daily stresses. After that, I enjoy dinner and quality time with my husband before he heads off to work at 8pm.
How did you get started in the industry?
I have always loved being in charge and organizing different events and functions. I am detail-oriented and a natural-born leader. When I decided to change my college major (my original plan was to get a degree in athletic training), I thought about what I could do with those talents that could also make a living. After much contemplation, I decided on a career in event and wedding planning! I graduated from Eastern Washington University with a bachelor’s degree in communications and business management along with a certificate in leadership.
During college, I did two internships for two very different event venues. It was a great opportunity to experience different sides of the industry. After college, I obtained four additional certificates in the world of event planning (Wedding/Event Planning, Event Décor, Luxury Wedding Planning, and Corporate Event Planning) from QC Event School.
Before starting my own business, I worked in the wedding industry as a manager at three different venues to gain event experience and make contacts before branching out on my own last year.
What inspires you?
There is inspiration all around us, especially from clients! Every client is different with a unique vision. I love being able to bring that to life for their wedding day.
I am a total Pinterest girl. I love scrolling through for myself, but also for current and future clients. I have a whole Pinterest board for my wedding planning business that is dedicated to wedding inspiration with 20 different sections from dresses to hair and make-up styles to place settings and bouquets.
I love attending wedding industry conferences and planning styled photo shoots with other industry vendors. There is so much creativity and inspiration that come from those type of events!
I am a big advocate for podcasts. There are so many out there with such valuable information. My favorites are Evolve Your Wedding Business Podcast with Heidi Thompson and She Creates Business with Kinsey Roberts.
What are your favorite online resources for your business?
I really enjoy Glamour and Grace and Style Me Pretty for wedding inspiration. Obviously, Planner’s Lounge keeps me up to date with what’s going on or trending in the industry and provides me with great tips for every part of my business. I also love working with Aisle Planner to stay organized and keep my clients informed.
Aside from wedding and event planning, how do you spend your time?
Other than planning events, I enjoy rock-climbing (so much so that my husband built a climbing wall in our garage!), riding my motorcycle (her name is Elphaba because she is black and green), hanging out with my husband and dogs, or settling in with a good book. Chris and I met in college at the rock-climbing wall, instantly clicked, and got married in the fall of 2018.
We love to travel… other than the small road trips we take throughout the year, we try to take one big trip a year. Last year we went to the Dominican Republic and earlier this year we went to Cancun. Next year we are hoping to make it up to Banff, Canada and do some serious snowboarding! We have two spoiled pups whom we love very much (most of the time) – Kaiser the Gentle Giant German Shepherd and River the Spunky Chocolate Lab.
Sydney, thank you so much for taking the time to share your story and a day in your life. If you are an event planner and would like to be featured, download our questionnaire today and email it to us along with a photo. If you aren’t sure about being featured, take a few minutes to read how it can help your business.
