What is your typical day like?
I had to write this as I went through today because each day is so different – that is the best part! I usually start my day about 6am. I have three girls so it’s super quiet and I can answer emails and get organized before they wake up. Right now I work at a home office, soon to be moving back into a store front, so the day is full of juggling.
I also act as President to a non-profit organization, Wish Upon A Wedding, so my day is split working events and wishes for them also. Usually by 7am, the girls are up and off to daycare or school by 8am. This is the time I take to get my head together, my husband (the best!) always makes me breakfast and I can get back to work around 9am.
Most days I am out at appointments such as venue visits and visiting with other wedding professionals. Each year I also make time to walk through the storage sections of our local rental companies so I can get an idea of what they’ve purchased throughout the year. Lunch is usually on the run (Wendy’s is my favorite – Frosty’s!) and by 3pm I am back at the home office to finish answering emails and returning phone calls.
On the days that I get to stay in the office, I usually work on getting all the paperwork pieces done, floor plans, wedding day timelines, rental agreements and finish any design consults. We also do consultations via Skype which is always interesting.
How did you get started in the industry?
I have been so blessed with the way things worked out. I attended the Art Institute of Philadelphia and achieved my Associates Degree. I went to work in the fashion industry first and had a baby which caused me to search for another job. I ended up at Dun & Bradstreet in the sales department and then became the event planner for the sales group and eventually for the entire company. I moved to North Carolina with them to help create a sales department and head up events in Greensboro, then 2 years later got laid off and Behind The Scenes Inc. was born! I chose weddings over corporate events so I could be crafty and more creative.
Where do you find design inspiration?
I don’t read wedding magazines at all, but I do browse some blogs and I love Pinterest! Most of my inspiration comes from the couple. If they let me into their ideals when we are at the consultation, I can come up with some really great design ideas and then work out the details later!
What are your favorite online resources for your business?
I love Planner’s Lounge for my own business and The Marketing Blog by Andy Ebon and I am a fan of the Association of Bridal Consultants. Without them, I wouldn’t be where I am today. I attend Annual Conference with ABC every year and other state and online training sessions.
Veronica, thank you so much for taking the time to share your story and a day in your life. If you are an event planner and would like to be featured, download our questionnaire today and email it to us along with a photo.
