What is your typical day like?
My day typically starts at 6AM. I make breakfast, pack my son’s lunch, and get him off to school. After drop off, I like to get a workout in such as boot camp class, spin, or box class. Recently, I’ve incorporated running because I am training for a ½ marathon.
After my workout, I work from home and start going through emails, replying to inquiries, or answering client questions if I don’t have any morning meetings.
In the afternoon, I pick up my son from school, do homework with him, and prepare dinner. He usually has some sports activities in the evenings. If I have evening meetings, my husband gets home from work and takes over dad duties as I head out the door to my work meetings.
I volunteer when I can in my son’s class or for his sports activities. I also juggle my business with typical life such as running errands, grocery shopping, and mom duties. Every day is different depending on meetings and wedding weeks.
How did you get started in the industry?
Prior to becoming a wedding planner, I was a stay at home mom and worked as a hairstylist part-time. I loved being at home with him and glad I took that time but I knew I wanted to do something else for my career. I enjoyed helping family and friends with their parties and would play on Pinterest for hours looking at party themes and wedding designs.
I told my husband one day that I wanted to be an event planner and start my own wedding planning business. He said “Ok, do it!”. So I did. I started my business as “Party Parsons” doing parties for my friends and family. When I started my business as a Party Planner, I offered a set-up package to set up the party decor decorations. For weddings, I offered this package for couples to put out their favors, placecards, and set up some of their personal decor items.
I did my first few events for free or low cost to gain experience. My goal was to plan and coordinate a wedding and I booked my first one at the beginning of my second year in business. I was hooked from there. I then marketed myself as a Wedding and Event Planner and started booking more weddings. When starting my wedding planning business, funds were very low so I used Facebook and Instagram to my advantage and showcased my work that way. I also got my planning business on the preferred vendor list at an event venue and gained a lot of hands-on experience. I still take weddings at that venue to this day.
I try to connect with my couples on a personal level and truly get to know them. By doing this, it has really helped my business grow.
I learned from each wedding I did and revised my wedding packages and pricing as needed. In 2018, I attended LVL Academy. It gave me the confidence to keep going even though it was hard trying to balance a growing successful planning business with being a mom too.
What inspires you?
There are a lot of planners and vendor friends that inspire me, but my clients inspire me the most.
For my clients to put their trust in me to execute their wedding day and see it all come to life makes my heart so happy. I love that feeling and want to do over and over and over. It is truly an honor and I don’t take any of it for granted no matter how big or small the wedding or budget. Love is beautiful and I love being part of each couple’s wedding day.
In life, my family inspires me. They have supported me and always push me to be better. Also, my friends inspire me. Most of my friends are working moms, hardworking entrepreneurs, and successful business owners. Somehow we balance it all.
What are your favorite online resources for your business?
My favorite resources are the Knot, Style me Pretty, and Be Inspired. Being part of groups on Facebook is a great resource to ask questions or get advice from other wedding and event planners.
Aside from wedding and event planning, how do you spend your time?
If I am not wedding planning, you can usually find me at the gym, cooking, shopping, or enjoying a glass of wine. As a family, we love going to the beach. Our favorite vacation spot is Maui. I hope to live there someday. My uncle took me to Hawaii in the summers when I was growing up and we take our kids there as much as we can. I love spending time with my husband. We have been together for 20 years and he is my best friend.
