What is your typical day like?
I resigned from my day job last fall as a web development manager to focus 100% on my wedding and event planning business, which is the real love of my life.
I start my day around 8:00am with coffee while I read my emails and check social media posts on Instagram, Facebook, and Pinterest.
I work from my home office, where I spend most of my day catching up on emails, responding to clients who request quotes or information, and on calls with potential clients who have scheduled their initial consultation with me.
After lunch, I work until about 6:30pm. I enjoy dinner with my family and try to spend time relaxing in the evening…but I always end up reading emails, DM’s, and social media accounts.
In addition to my wedding planning business, I run a group on Facebook called Florida Keys Destination Weddings. I spend time approving posts and new member requests. As well as gathering content to post.
How did you get started in the industry?
I got started after spending years planning and decorating parties for family members and friends. They all suggested that I design and plan events professionally.
Several years ago I was unemployed for a few months and I decided to spend time putting together this business. I came up with a name, registered a domain, and started my event planning business.
However, I went back to my corporate job after several months and this business became more of a hobby for about five years. Not because I wasn’t serious about it, but because I needed the stability that my day job provided.
What inspires you?
I find inspiration from many things – I love Pinterest. I am most inspired when I get a new wedding or event to plan. Right away I am immersed in every aspect of the planning process like décor, flowers, setup, floorplan, and theme. I am a very visual person, so I can envision what an event space will look like just from seeing it and understanding my client’s taste and style.
What are your favorite online resources for your business?
I love Kellie Daab. She is the owner of Wedding Industry Education. She has been instrumental in helping me learn how to market myself. I often feel odd boasting about my work, but she has been a great resource for helping me understand how to demonstrate my value to potential clients.
Aside from wedding and event planning, how do you spend your time?
I love the beach and the ocean. We are an avid fishing and boating family. I also enjoy traveling and photography.
Terri, thank you so much for taking the time to share your story and a day in your life.
