Keeping the Peace With MOB & MOG
A bride and groom come to you ready and willing to make decisions, plan the big day and listen to all of the expert advice you have to offer. Then something happens. The future mother-in-law to the bride (MOG – mother of the groom) decides she wants to pay for the invitations, flowers and rehearsal dinner but wants to know the total today and it’s still 9 months out, but expects the bride to choose it all right away. You now have to step in and mediate the situation.
Naturally you do not want the bride to make decisions based on emotion alone. Ideally, she takes time to hire the vendors she loves and choose the details that fit the overall style of the wedding. On the other hand, you don’t want to upset the MOG and add fuel to the fire. How do you handle this situation while keeping the enthusiasm in the air for all parties involved? Invite the MOG to a coffee or a lunch meeting with the bride and yourself. Inform the bride that you want to go over the details with both of them to make sure you’re covering all of the bases and also to show the MOG that it’s not as simple as selecting a bunch of different items and hoping they go together. Having both of them there with you will help to show the process and the importance of following a timeline, getting quotes and avoiding rash decisions. This will also make the MOG feel included in her future daughter-in-law’s wedding plans on another level aside from writing a check.
When situations like these arise, focus on the bonding moments that are formed during wedding planning process and remind clients and the others involved that while everyone has agendas and opinions, everyone is doing this for one purpose and that is so that two people can celebrate as they commit to spending the rest of their lives together.
