Event Planner Profile | Alison Sappington
Welcome to our Planner Profiles! Planner Profiles share inspiration and insight from Planner’s Lounge coaching and mentoring clients. Today we are thrilled to feature Maryland wedding planner Alison Sappington from Alison To The Altar!
Tell us how you got started in event planning
I have always loved planning and hosting events. When I broke my arm and was unable to use my right hand, someone suggested I become a minister and do weddings as I did not have to use my arm! I started out officiating and then the rest fell into place. I have been in the industry for 5 years and it has evolved into a full-service company. I try to do some sort of continuing education every year to keep my skills sharp. This year I hired Debbie from Planner’s Lounge as my wedding planner coach and she has helped me narrow my market.
What successes have you had in your business in the last six months?
I have had quite a few – my largest season to date, more high-end brides, rebranding with a website makeover, and won the best planner for my area for a second year!!
How has the Planner’s Lounge Mentoring Program helped you and your business?
I am planning to extend my training with Debbie, the Founder of Planner’s Lounge. My biggest take aways were reviewing and increasing my pricing, realizing I don’t need to advertise everywhere, and getting my business and planning systems in order. Her wedding planner tools have been very helpful too as you don’t need to reinvent the wheel!
Tell us about you! What do you love to do outside of your work?
I try to get away every February to recharge – somewhere warm! I attend as many social events as I can so I am always seen in the industry which keeps your name in people’s mind.
My favorite hobby is shopping! I live at the beach so I enjoy all kinds of outdoor activities – paddle boarding, fishing, swimming, and my favorite activity is hot yoga.
Is there anything else you would like to share?
I think it is really important to stay current and to take some type of training class yearly to keep your event planning and business skill sharp. I also think if you can intern with another industry member who is further ahead in their journey, you can always learn something from them. Online reviews are important to get because they help tremendously with getting leads. My last piece of advice: You can’t please all people no matter what!
