What is your typical day like?
When I founded my company, I was doing multiple day jobs—nannying, retail, and running the business. I told myself that when I was my own boss one day, I rarely wanted to wake up to an alarm! Excitingly, now that I am full-time, I finally reached that day. I usually wake up between 9-10 am and get my day started with stretching. I then eat breakfast, shower, put on a fun sundress, and begin work around 11 am. My first task is creating a list of what needs to be completed that day and reviewing my wedding planning checklists, so I know where I am in the process of each of my client’s weddings. After that, I get to work. I will create wedding design decks, create floor plans, correspond with vendors, review contracts, email clients, and so much more. Every day is different, which is why I love this job! There is also the business side since I own the company, which includes doing consults, managing my amazing team, accounting, and marketing. My day ends around 5-6 pm. Many people are perplexed that I have a 5-7 hour work day, but my motto is working smarter, not harder.
How did you get started in the industry?
Growing up, I loved acting and anything theatre. In my senior year of high school, my teacher let me direct a play (Peter Pan), and I fell in love with the idea of using so many talented people to pull together a vision I dreamed up in my mind. I went and studied theatre at Virginia Tech but found about halfway through that I wanted a career where I could use my creativity and organizational skills. My faith is important to me, so I prayed about it and literally heard “event planning”—wild! I spent that night researching on Pinterest (my version of Google) what an event planner does, and I found that it was me in a job! Wedding planning is very similar to directing because you use so many different people (caterers, florists, rentals, etc.) to pull together a vision.
After that, I began interning and assisting other planners in the DC wedding industry and eventually became a vendor for an event rental company after I graduated. This was short-lived, as I soon realized I was meant to be on the planning side of things. My boss at that job was very encouraging, and I had two options: work for another planner or start my own company. I was 22 at that point, so starting a business hadn’t even crossed my mind! My boss encouraged me to take the leap of faith…so I did!
Now, three years later, our company produces over half a million dollars worth of events each year, has been in numerous blogs and magazines, and we have a whole team of planners. So glad I took that leap of faith!
What inspires you?
Our company mission is to design seamless and stress-free wedding experiences for our clients—in which that experience extends to the whole process of planning, not just the wedding day. Thus, I gravitate towards brands that provide wonderful customer experiences. Here are some of my favorites and why they inspire me.
What are your favorite online resources for your business?
Aside from wedding and event planning, how do you spend your time?
I love cooking, baking, tennis, and watching Netflix. My favorite vacation spots are in Europe, mainly Italy and France. I am inspired by the beautiful scenery and food!
