What is your typical day like?
My days are a very organized chaos since August 2017, thanks to my second child entering our family. I am pretty well versed at juggling a family and a business constantly throughout the day, which is something I’d mentally prepared for since I decided to start this business long ago.
As I am feeding my baby, I peruse and filter new emails. This lets me know what is on the docket when I am able to sit at my desk later. It helps me start a mental checklist of where to start my focus. Once the baby is fed, I get my 3-year-old out the door with my husband who drops him off at daycare three mornings a week.
Between 9:00am – 2:45pm, I spend my time working through my client’s to-do lists in order of most important. Setting up meetings, reviewing contracts, updating layouts and orders, working on wedding day timelines, etc. I also have scheduled phone calls during the times when I know my baby is napping. When he’s awake, I read emails/articles while he’s feeding and I either listen to my subscribed work webinars or have lunch when he’s awake. I have an on-going weekly schedule, that lists each client and their current tasks at hand, plus my next-up responsibilities to take care of for them. This lets me know at a glance where I’m always leaving off at.
Once both kids are in bed in the evening, I am able to schedule a client call if needed for those busy clients who can’t take calls during a work-day. I limit this to one day per week.
How did you get started in the industry?
I was a theatre major and communications minor in school. So while it’s not directly related, events are a full production. It’s like putting on a show and you don’t want anyone to miss a cue! I also had several years experience as a server when I was younger, and I think that’s so important. If you’ve worked in fine-dining, you know a lot about the catering and customer service experience.
In college, I worked backstage hospitality at a concert venue, so I got to know the importance of the VIP experience. Post college, I worked in an art gallery where I helped plan shows for the artists and learned a lot about hanging art and aesthetics. Then I managed a wine tasting room where I also managed small events. That’s when I realized I wanted to work as a wedding planner (we hosted weddings on the vineyard). A couple years later I was able to start my wedding planning business!
What inspires you?
I know this sounds crazy, but I don’t actually follow a lot of wedding blogs anymore. I used to! But then it actually started crowding my brain more than I felt like I was benefiting from it. I am a minimalist, so clean lines and beautiful vast images inspire me. I actually am very into interior decorating, and I get a lot of inspiration from that. On Instagram, I follow a lot of rental companies – @casadeperrin, @archiverentals, @latavolalinen. I like to follow a couple of super inspiration planners and photographers like @mindyricedesign and @joyproctor, plus a few paper designers and home organizers like some local Nashvillians @thehomeedit.

What are your favorite online resources for your business?
I love AllSeated to make my floorplans. I feel like ever since using them, my life got easier! I LOVE HelloSign for contracts, which is great b/c it’s free for 3 contracts a month. I don’t normally have 3 a month, so on the rare month that might happe, I just have to pay $10 for that month and then don’t have to the next month. I use Genius Scan on my phone for when I need to scan a doc and send quickly.
Aside from wedding and event planning, how do you spend your time?
I have very little free time! But it’s 80% spent with family, 10% trying to squeeze in a workout because I feel mentally stronger if I feel physically strong, and 10% having some time with my friends! I try and overlap that with family time though on weekends if my friends have kids of any age, because then we just do family play-dates and get to all hang out and catch up!
My happy place is the beach and with my extended family, so we get to go to Cabo, Mexico every year for a couple weeks to relax and gaze at the ocean. I think the ocean is actually my most inspirational form on earth. The sound of it actually makes me breathe easier.
