What is your typical day like?
I typically wake up at 5:30 AM and spend a few minutes on Instagram before I get out of bed. I leave the house each day to get my kids off to daycare and school at 6:45 AM. I am also a full-time elementary teacher, so I work a full day and get home around 6 PM.
After making dinner, spending time with the kids, and putting my 2 year old to bed, I hop on my computer to return vendor emails, check in with clients, work on wedding and event timelines, and schedule my social media posts. I also hold a lot of coffee meetings or meetings over drinks in the evening with industry vendors.
My day typically ends around 10 PM. I get most of my work done on the weekends when I can dedicate more undivided attention to my wedding planning business tasks.
How did you get started in the industry?
I have quite the non-traditional path to becoming a wedding planner, as I have a bachelor’s degree in biology and a master’s degree in education. I’ve had a passion for curating beautiful events for as long as I can remember.
My love of celebrations stems from my childhood memories of family holiday parties and birthday fetes thrown so effortlessly by my mother. I watched in awe as so much care was placed in preparing the meal, decorating the table, and the small details. This admiration for planning events only grew as I blossomed into an adult.
After being in the education field for over ten years, I decided to start my own event planning company in 2017. I typically invest in industry education each year by attending wedding business workshops and conferences. This past year, I attended the Creative at Heart Conference and in the year prior I attended Wedding MBA.
What inspires you?
I’m inspired by interior design, architecture, nature, event industry blogs, and Pinterest. I have always loved Better Homes and Gardens magazine and love to look through their interior design and tablescapes.
I love European architecture, so when I travel that is also a source of inspiration. Some specific blogs I follow are Hostess Haven, Style Meets Soiree, and Fashionable Hostess. These blogs give me inspiration for designing events for my clients.
Wedding blogs that I follow are Style Me Pretty, Martha Stewart Weddings, Planner’s Lounge, and Aisle Planner. Lifestyle blogs that I follow are Lauren Conrad, Celebration Stylist, and A Beautiful Mess.
What are your favorite online resources for your business?
I absolutely love Megan Martin Creative. She is a former wedding planner who now designs templates and websites for wedding industry professionals. She has great blog posts that I always find helpful and I have purchased her wedding welcome package and mission and pricing guides, which I was able to customize for my business.
I also love Creative at Heart, which is the conference and blog started by Kat Schmoyer. I recently attended the conference and have always found her blog posts immensely helpful.
Aside from wedding and event planning, how do you spend your time?
When I’m not planning and coordinating weddings and events, I love to spend time at home, curled up with a book, or binge watching Netflix with my husband.
I spend a lot of time with my daughter and two step children. We love being outdoors. I love traveling, both in the States and abroad. I’ve visited 7 European countries, and I’m itching to get back soon. I love a good dinner party, so you can usually find me entertaining friends and family on a regular basis.
