Building a good team for your event planning business starts with the owner setting the example. As team members represent your company and themselves, opportunities will come for each team member to work on their strengths and weaknesses. These are called team development strategies.

As a team, we are all growing and will be stretched to become better and stronger as we face personal and professional challenges. As the owner of the company, applaud and encourage this type of development because everyone will benefit. Brides and grooms will be happier with our performance as a company.

Another part of building a good team is thanking your team daily for the work that they do, and providing positive feedback (not negative) to your team. When you are giving feedback, if you feel like you are just going through the motions ask yourself, “What would improve the exchange?”

Some important skills for giving positive feedback are having purpose, directness, respect and shared responsibility. Think of what it is that you want to communicate to the other person. If feedback is delivered in a demeaning way, when it comes to constructive criticism, you put the other person on the defensive.

Your team depends on you for feedback.  They want to know how they are doing and what changes are coming. Positive feedback also boosts their self-confidence. Build that trusting relationship with your team so that they can receive the feedback and improve upon any challenges.
