Quick Tip: Put Your Oxygen Mask on First
There’s a reason the flight attendant tells you to put your oxygen mask on first. You have to take care of yourself before you can take care of anyone else.
This is one thing that I have gotten significantly better at over the years of being an event planner. When I take care of myself first, I can take better care of my clients on the event day. For me, that means packing healthy snacks in my bag, drinking water instead of soda, taking time for light yoga in the morning, and going to sleep extra early the night before. These things help me stay focused and energized instead of feeling worn out, dehydrated, and hungry as the event or days go on.
Our clients and vendors are relying so heavily on us and it’s crucial that we are on our “A” game. After experiencing burnout in the past, I do a much better job for my clients now that I take care of myself and my needs during the days of the event.
What can you do to take better care of yourself so that you can do your best job for your clients?

Depending on how late the event goes (or sometimes, doesn’t matter) me and my assistant(s) will have a post-event drink and debrief….or vent, whichever the events of the day call for. I also make sure to schedule some no-work-talk time, even if I am “available unlimited” to my clients, usually on Sundays. I’m sure they’d like to speak to a zen planner, than a grumpy one.
Great advice Jillian. Thanks for sharing!
