What is your typical day like?
My day typically starts around 7am. I am not a morning person and I enjoy my coffee! I like to get up and ready before my 2-year-old twins start their day. As the venue coordinator at St. Boniface Golf Club, I often work late afternoons, evenings, and weekends. This means I get to spend the morning making breakfast with my kids before they go to daycare. Most days when I arrive at work, I start tackling emails.
I coordinate just under 90 weddings per year, along with many other tournaments, corporate parties, member functions, and conferences. I am an extremely hands on person, so the majority of my evenings are spent at the events, perfecting the décor set up, coordinating the ceremony, and executing the dinner portion of the evening. I am so thankful that my career allows me to coordinate so many different kinds of events and express my creativity and passion.
My day usually ends around 10pm, when the dinner and speeches are over and the party is just getting started. I am so thankful to be able to spend my evenings at home with my husband, watching movies and drinking tea!
How did you get started in the industry?
I have been in the wedding and event industry for 17 years. I completely enjoy being able to meet new people every day, and help so many people with the most important day of their lives.
When I completed high school, I took a three-year counseling degree. I believe that this allows me to understand and resolve conflicts in regards to family dynamics.
I started working in the banquet department at St. Boniface Golf Club 17 years ago which has allowed me to help with over 2,000 weddings to date. I took a 3-year internship at the Italian Cultural Center in Vancouver, BC which allowed me to coordinate and supervise weddings for up to 700 guests.
I have also taken a number of classes through the Manitoba Tourism and Education Counsel on social media marketing and conflict resolution that help me on a daily basis.
Most recently I took the WPICC Wedding Planning Course and became a Marriage Commissioner in the Province of Manitoba.
Where do you find design inspiration?
I am a huge fan of Wedding Bells magazine. I love the fact that it is local, it’s real, and it pertains to my local market. I spend the majority of my morning or afternoon at the computer so there is something so relaxing about flipping through the pages of a print magazine.
I am also a major Pinterest fan and love how easy and accessible it is for our brides to be able to show me exactly what they are envisioning.
I also find design inspiration at our annual trade shows and open houses in the industry.
What are your favorite online resources for your business?
I rely heavily on Google Calendars to keep all of my meetings and events organized. I don’t know how I could manage without it!
Constant Contact allows me to send emails to all of our 2016, 2017, and 2018 brides at the same time. It is an absolute life and time saver.
Tricia, thank you so much for taking the time to share your story and a day in your life. If you are an event planner and would like to be featured, download our questionnaire today and email it to us along with a photo.
