What is your typical day like?
Working from home is pretty great. I have breakfast in my PJs with my partner, drink my latte, and watch the morning news. Then I settle into my office nook to check emails, answer inquiries, and work on client tasks. Today, this meant providing my event packages and event pricing for a baby shower and inquiring with printers to print a media wall for a corporate event I am working on.
After a quick lunch with my partner, I check and respond to social media posts and update my blog. My partner will usually bring me a cup of tea in the afternoon (yep, he’s pretty great) and I’ll put the finishing touches on my run sheet for an upcoming event, before logging off for the day at around 6 pm.
If I have a client meeting or networking event, I’ll bring my laptop with me and work remotely from a café, if I know I’ll be out of the office for most of the day.
How did you get started in the industry?
My background was in corporate marketing for one of the largest national retailers in Australia, so I am fairly new to the events and wedding industry. I came to a career crossroads eventually, where I had just left a position I had been in for a long time and was deciding whether to return to the corporate world or try something new.
I knew that I was an extremely organized and creative person, who loved discovering the latest new trends for friends and family members having events, so it seemed like a natural fit for me to move into events management and start my own business. I completed qualifications in Wedding Planning, Style & Design, and took a small business course through a local women’s collective to help me understand all that there was to do, to get started.
Next, I worked closely with an executive coach to create the right mindset and build my confidence, and just go for it! And then…. COVID-19 happened. It has definitely been a rollercoaster, but in Australia, we have been extremely lucky that we have come through the worst of it, and that the events industry is beginning to recover.
What inspires you?
I love the mentality that “It’s okay to be different”, and there are so many trailblazers in the business world that I am inspired by. I have always loved @rocknrollbridemagazine, which is an endless source of inspiration for quirky and authentically different weddings. Cathy Heller has a great podcast, @dontkeepyourdayjob, which helped me to build the confidence to get out there and start a business. And finally, @colettewerden always has the words to capture my feelings and make me feel understood.
What are your favorite online resources for your business?
Plannerslounge.com always has blog articles to help me learn more and grow, I also love livelywed.com which has some awesome resources to use in your wedding business.
Aside from wedding and event planning, how do you spend your time?
I’m an avid ballroom dancer, and compete in the American Smooth and Rhythm styles – so I love a good Swarovski crystal! You can always find me on the dance floor at the end of the wedding day, no matter how tired I am!
Nicky, thank you so much for taking the time to share your story and a day in your life.
