What is your typical day like?
Sanela: My usual day starts with morning tea, while reading e-mails. It is followed by arranging meetings, calls with the newlyweds, venue tours with the newlyweds or meeting the existing or potential vendors.
It all depends on the season. Winter usually consists mainly of office work and vendor meetings, while wedding season starts in summer. During that time Eneja and I are all over Istria, from our office, to the newlyweds’ residence and the wedding venues.
After all business and wedding related matters are resolved for the day, I like to spend time with my closest ones or watch a good film or TV series. During the summer, whenever I catch some free time from work, I take advantage of it and go to the beach.
Eneja: I get up around 7AM and check any new emails. Then I go for a run which gives me energy for the day. Between 8 and 9AM, I sit down in my home office and the work day begins.
In the morning, I often meet with vendors and venues. My afternoons are my favorite because that is when I meet with clients. I adore communicating with the newlyweds because I do my best to understand their wishes. In a way I get to stand in their shoes for a bit, sharing their anticipation for the wedding!
When I am able to, I share evenings with my family and friends. Summer is the destination wedding season in Croatia. My day during summer is much different than the one I described. During busy season, all planning efforts come to life.
How did you get started in the industry?
Sanela: From the moment I first saw Jennifer Lopez in ‘The Wedding Planner’ I wanted to become a wedding planner myself! Eneja took the wedding organization course while we were still colleagues at the Faculty of Economics. Eneja’s enthusiasm caught on with me pretty soon after her course. At that time I was also taking part in an event industry organization.
Eneja and I clicked from the first days we started doing our college projects together, and not much time was needed when we both got an idea of building up our own independent business together – the wedding planning business. And I must say, I consider us a killing combination!
I am aware that for the J.Lo role to be an inception for my business dream sounds like a little girl’s cliché, but I am sure every girl dreams of becoming a wedding planner at a young age. It’s just that I took the opportunity to stick with my dream long enough!
Eneja: When I was younger, wedding planning was just a distant dream to me. During study at the Faculty of Economics, I tried to find an opportunity to get closer to wedding planning. I enrolled in the wedding planning course and since the first day, I knew destination wedding planning was the industry I want to work in! The course master offered me a position on her wedding planning team. That was my first step. Even today I can’t find appropriate words to explain how excited I was at that moment!
When I gathered enough self-confidence, I co-founded the wedding planning agency with my Sanela.
What inspires you?
Sanela: People inspire me the most. Of course, websites and magazines are great sources of ideas also. But many times, my clients come up with creative ideas. Once I talk to a new client and get to know them better, I am inspired to produce new ideas just for their event.
Eneja: I enjoy scrolling through wedding websites and magazines. I usually find nice ideas there, but true inspiration comes from my wedding clients. I am inspired by each newlyweds’ inquiry. Each couple has their unique wishes and ideas how the wedding should be.
Every wedding brings new challenges and proves to be a new adventure for me. To truly understand my clients, I have to do my best to get in their shoes. That’s the moment my love for weddings starts taking over and inspiration kicks in!
What are your favorite online resources for your business?
Sanela: The Knot, Instagram, Pinterest, and many personal blogs with great advice and articles.
Eneja: Brides magazine, Instagram, Pinterest, and websites like Wedding Wire, The Perfect Palette, Wedding Lovely, and Style Me Pretty. I must say, writing a blog comes as a great source of knowledge also. When putting together a story about a certain topic, it always ends up with me researching all kinds of wedding-related content.
Aside from wedding and event planning, how do you spend your time?
Sanela: I really like to travel. Over the summer, I like spending time at the sea as much as possible. I avoid big overcrowded beaches with lots of tourists and bars. I prefer hidden and peaceful places. As for the winter, I like snow and skiing. And for the whole year – concerts feed my soul!
Eneja: I can’t resist traveling any chance I get! I believe that education and travel are the only investments which enrich a person in the long run. Material things get broken or lost, but nobody can strip away knowledge and memories from you.
I also love music and dance. Starting in preschool, I was a ballet dancer for 12 years. I have chosen a different career than ballet, but it left a special place in my heart for classic music and dance.
Sandal and Eneja, thank you so much for taking the time to share your stories and a day in your lives.
