What is your typical day like?
My day typically starts around 7:30am with an enthusiastic greeting from my year-old Italian Mastiff Remington and my husband, Jason. Once the dog is preoccupied with his breakfast, I immediately log into my email and get my day going.
I try to work from home for the first half of the day before heading out for meetings in the afternoon. Depending on the day, I may spend the afternoon in meetings with clients and vendors, which usually happen either at my office in downtown Denver, a coffee shop, or on sunny days, on a patio with a glass of rosé.
I try to make it back home by 5pm, before my husband gets home, to start dinner. Once we have dinner, we usually make some after-dinner cocktails and sit on our patio to wind down. We love watching cooking shows like Top Chef before bed while Remington manages to occupy 50% of our bed space.
I am a chronic email-checker but I try to put the electronics away by 9pm and get to sleep by 10:30 or so. I love that every day as a wedding planner can have so much variety and allows me to determine my own schedule!
How did you get started in the industry?
By accident! I went to school as a pre-med major and thought my future was destined for a life in medicine. After a few “what do I really want to do with my life” discussions with family and friends, I decided to go in a completely different direction.
Upon graduating from college, I moved to San Francisco where I began working as a venue manager. I was fortunate to see wedding planners and designers in the venue and was immediately drawn to the creative and relationship aspects of their jobs.
San Francisco turned out to not be the best fit for me, so I chose to move back to my home state of Colorado. At the time, my older sister was planning her own Colorado wedding, but from Scotland. I acted as her proxy for many of her vendor meetings. At every meeting I asked who I should work for to get into the planning business. Revel and Bloom was always the answer! Very long story short, I was able to secure an assisting position which turned into purchasing the company only a year later!
What inspires you?
I am so fortunate to be in an industry that has an incredible amount of local talent. So many of the most inspiring people are ones that I call friends. Outside of my local circle, I love the work of Hart Floral, am inspired by the sophistication of Ines di Santo bridal, and admire the planning and design skills of Ira + Lucy.
Some of my favorite blogs are Rocky Mountain Bride, Green Wedding Shoes, and Grey Likes Weddings. I’ve also been known to covet every issue of Grace Ormonde and Kinfolk.
What are your favorite online resources for your business?
The Perfect Palette and Biz Bash
Aside from wedding and event planning, how do you spend your time?
If I had all the free time (and money!) in the world I would absolutely be traveling constantly. My husband and I love exploring all sorts of destinations and try to take at least one large trip a year.
I love skiing and hiking, horseback riding, and rafting. I also recently got an Instant Pot, so I’ve been spending lots of time researching and trying out new recipes.
Elise, thank you so much for taking the time to share your story and a day in your life. If you are an event planner and would like to be featured, download our questionnaire today and email it to us along with a photo. If you aren’t sure about being featured, take a few minutes to read how it can help your business.
