How did you get started in the industry?
I started my wedding planning business Calluna Events in 2004 after I had been working in non-profit and corporate events for six years. After a few friends asked me to help them with their wedding, I saw an opportunity and niche to create a wedding and event planning business.
Calluna Events was born out of a night out with some girlfriends who urged me over drinks that wedding planning was my calling. I honestly never saw myself as a business owner or an entrepreneur but I saw the need for a wedding planning company in our area. At the time there was only one other planner in Boulder and several in the Denver area and throughout the state.
I’ve always had a desire to do work that positively impacts people as well as work that is rewarding and challenging at the same time. Planning weddings can be the most challenging, yet rewarding work there is and I love the variety and challenge of my work every day! We are now in our 15th year of business and our team continues to grow and expand into new projects.
What inspires you?
Each and every one of our couples
My ultimate goal is to have the wedding guests walk into my client’s wedding and say, “This is so them.”
I’m also very inspired by the Calluna team. Our team right now, affectionately called the CallunaCrew, is the best team we’ve had – they are incredible women who I feel fortunate to have on the team – the kind who will roll up their sleeves to get the job done, who are friendly, fun, energetic, and inspiring!
I’m also inspired by my husband and our two children, Maggie and Grey. Becoming a mother makes you re-prioritize what’s important. H
avingkids made me work not only harder, but smarter.
My peers in the industry are a constant source of inspiration. I seek out advice and inspiration from those closest to me and those I respect and admire for their contributions to the wedding industry. I don’t need to look much further than the Colorado wedding community to find really incredible people elevating the wedding industry and inspiring each other and every day.
What are your favorite online resources for your business?
Right now we are using Aisle Planner with our couples so each Calluna couple has their own Aisle Planner account.
We just started with Honeybook – which we are mostly using for potential client tracking, proposal sending, and invoicing. Since just started using it, I can’t speak to how much we like it yet. W
I love reading through articles on Planners Lounge of course! Through what Debbie has created, we have incredible resources at our finger tips!
Aside from wedding and event planning, how do you spend your time?
I work hard so I can play hard; my favorite moments are those with my husband Brandon and our two children Maggie and Grey. And let’s not forget the coffee & chocolate that add to my perfect bliss every day!
I love cycling, yoga, running, and being outdoors. Travel is a big priority – we travel as a family to Sayulita Mexico and Costa Rica. This past summer we traveled to Scotland (where my Mom was born and raised) and England.
