What is your typical day like?
With my first company, Alexandra Lillian Weddings and Events, a typical day for me varies depending on the time of year. The wedding industry, like most, has a busy season which happens to be during the summer. From April – September, I work a seven-day work week and my days consist of constant emails, meetings, and weddings.
During the busy season, I’m mostly working IN my business rather than ON my business which is why I started The Wedding Executive, a virtual wedding planning company. I saw a white space in the market for an online wedding planning service to help couples plan their weddings in a much more efficient and productive way.
With the Wedding Executive, I get to work with couples across Canada, planning their dream wedding. This gives couples living in remote areas access to a wedding planner that would otherwise have not been available to them. These couples get to conveniently work with me from the comfort of their own homes or offices. This also allows me to help them and stay comfy cozy in my favorite yoga pants during the day.
In the evenings, I like to relax and unwind with a big cup of tea and a good book or documentary. If I’m not careful, I can spend too many hours on Netflix watching all their new documentaries.
How did you get started in the industry?
I graduated with my BA in Political Science. In University, it was my dream to work behind the scenes creating events for political campaigns. After several meetings with local political representatives, I realized that a lot of positions, apart from being a politician, are on a volunteer basis. Let’s just say that I love my boutique coffee and was not willing to give that up in the mornings, so I pursued other options working in event planning.
A few months into my search, I stumbled upon an internship opportunity with a local wedding planner. I instantly fell in love with weddings. After interning, I spent a couple months building my first business, Alexandra Lillian Weddings and Events. After growing that business for four years, I launched The Wedding Executive in January 2018. This is the first business of it’s kind in Canada and I could not be more thrilled to assist a wider range of couples to plan their dream wedding.
Where do you find design inspiration?
I love looking at print magazines. I am a very visual person and enjoy cutting out my favorite photo shoots and placing them on a mood board. It’s almost as though physically holding the image in your hand brings you closer to the world where it was taken.
Having new experiences every day gives me inspiration. This can include going for a walk, visiting a farmer’s market, or browsing an art gallery. The more you see and experience, the more you will be inspired. Go for a walk in a new area and see how it changes your perspective!
