When and why did you decide to start a wedding planning business?
I had been thinking about starting the business since I planned my brother’s wedding over 10 years ago. I’ve been blessed with the gift to organize and an eye for decorating so it seemed like a natural progression. Also, after I had planned many events for family and friends, I thought it was time to get paid for this work I love so much! The designing and coordinating were things I couldn’t stop thinking about. In February of 2013, I got serious about it, knowing I was going to be turning 50 the next year. So I went back to school and earned a certificate in wedding and event planning . I also took other event courses at the local college. In February of 2013, I got serious about it, knowing I was going to be turning 50 the next year. So I went back to school and earned a certificate in wedding and event planning . I also took other event courses at the local college. I felt a strong need to prove to myself that it was something I could do BEFORE I turned ..ehhem..50. (Yes, I did it!)
What was your previous career or work experience before starting your business?
Prior to my business launch, I worked with a placement agency where I was sent to various events, to fill different positions as needed. This included registration, assisting at fundraisers, and any other job they would give me. I wanted to get as much hands-on event experience as possible.
I still work with a company as a Special Event Professional Contractor. It helps me supplement the slow times and I love that I get to be involved in fundraising events.
While my two kids were young, I coordinated many of their school events and fundraisers. Prior to that, B.K. (before kids), I was an insurance broker for 14 years! Boring, right? But it did give me skills that I have been able to transfer to this business.
What advantages do you have over younger wedding planners?
For me, having been involved in so many different office settings and skill levels, I definitely have life experience on my side. I’m experienced in working with clients who are my age as well as the millennials. I know that people from my generation require different attention than this new generation. As far as weddings go, I know how to relate well to the parents of the couple getting married. That’s very important as well.
I also have a lot of contacts from working for many years and have been able to network with them to bring in new opportunities.
Does your age present any disadvantages in our industry?
No, I don’t see any disadvantages for me personally at my age. It’s just a matter of how you present yourself and communicate with people. I also have an assistant who is much younger than I am. I do run things by her sometimes if I have a question about something from her generation. It’s good to surround yourself with a diverse group of “go to” people. I do the best job I can for every client.
What are you most proud of in your life/career?
In life, I’m most proud of my close relationship with my husband and kids. We are an amazing support system for each other. That, and my faith in God drives me in all I do.
In my career, I am most proud of the fact that I haven’t let my fears stop me from moving forward and pursuing this business. My new attitude is “Just do it”. I’m constantly learning new things.
I’m proud that I’ve been able to build relationships with clients and other event professionals while building the business.
When a client says they are so grateful for what I’ve done to help them, that is the best feeling of all!
What advice would you give to someone over the age of 40 who is considering starting an event planning business?
I would say age is just a number. If you have the skills and passion for it, I believe it’s possible. I would recommend learning as much as possible from classes, webinars, etc. Volunteering is an excellent way to get involved in all types of events and you can learn so much and network with like-minded individuals. I had open heart surgery two years ago and that was definitely something that could have stopped me. I just considered it a speed bump.
The point of that is, there will be roadblocks and bumps but don’t let them stop you! Constantly be learning new things.
Is there anything else you would like to share about yourself or your business?
We are not just wedding planners, but also coordinate and design galas and fundraising events. I love to help non-profits with their start up and grand openings. I have a passion for helping our military. I also love to craft and paint and offer custom décor.
