When NOT to Answer Your Business Phone

  1. Erica says:

I tend to let most calls go to voicemail and then call back at a more convenient time. I do this for two reasons, I hate getting caught off guard or in a situation where I can’t take notes and I get a TON of spam calls. So what I do, is if it looks like it could be a potential client, I shoot a quick text to the number, saying that I am unavailable at the moment and that the best way to reach me is by email or text and then we schedule a call when I can be fully present.

Debbie, thanks for sharing this article! Some times it just isn’t a good time to take a call, and while that shouldn’t be the case a lot, there are times that just aren’t convenient where I can be my professional self! The “when you are with a client” is particularly good. I make sure my clients have my total attention when I’m with them; whomever is calling at that moment will appreciate that same consideration when I’m with them later!

  3. Lorna says:

I love this article. I can’t stand when someone answers the phone then ask if they can call me back because they were on another call or finishig up with a client. Then I say okay and they ask me to leave the info on their voice mail.

I also dislike when I call them and they ask me to email them or refer to their website.

  4. I used to feel guilty as it seemed I was almost always unavailable by phone when people would call but working from home with small children left only certain windows of time open of quietness with no distractions to talk on the phone. Now I always let clients know right away that the best way to reach me via email (or text) and I return calls at quiet times a few times a day.
