Event Design: It’s All About the Details
Have you ever heard of the saying, “It’s all in the details?” Chances are you have and the saying is true. The details in a wedding can make all the difference, in a positive or negative light. If you have ever seen the TLC show where David Tuterra swoops in to save the details of a wedding that is going nowhere fast, you can understand how the way details are laid out makes all the difference.
Let’s pretend you have a bride who wants to have fairy garden theme (yes, a fairy – garden – theme). She pulls out the decorations she has started to purchase, pages she has printed off of Pinterest and shows you the bridesmaid dresses. In this collection there are miniature fairy statues of assorted colors, pastel flowers with accents of silver glitter, pretend wings for the guests to wear as favors, wands, and the dresses look like something you would wear to a party – a five year olds princess birthday party and you are the five year old.
Here is the key to not allowing this client to run out the door and never speak to you again – show her ideas that incorporate her elements but in a more subtle style. For example, instead of fake pastels flowers from the dollar store, show her pictures of assorted tulips, roses and daises as centerpieces placed in vases of various heights and design or even the use of vintage tea cups for the garden party theme as a unique touch. Instead of glitter and wands adding the sparkle to the décor, help her to envision the courtyard transformed with strands of white twinkling lights that are dimmed during the evening to set a romantic and entrancing mood. Glass hanging tea lights from trees can be hung to give the illusion of fairies watching from over head instead of plastic fairy statues scattered throughout the setting.
The use of various fabrics throughout the wedding day from table linens to chairs covers and details such as wrapped lace around a terrace will add dimension in subtle ways instead of having to literally have a backdrop of fairies in a forest. Hopefully you have begun to understand that it is possible to take a bride and grooms idea, no matter how far out it may seem, and turn it into an event that will wow them beyond their imagination and impress their guests. Don’t be afraid to take the couple to a fabric store or décor warehouse and demonstrate how you can take their vision and pull it together with examples of what is in the store. Sometimes all it takes is a little guidance with a bride and groom and pulling in the reigns to make them see the beauty in the finer details.
