What is your typical day like?
Ironically, my day starts and ends the same way…checking my phone for last minute emails. It helps me balance my morning better if I know what is waiting in my inbox. After short order cook duties and carpool responsibilities for my two sons are complete, I settle into my desk around 9:30am to update Facebook, respond to emails and return phone calls. Mondays and Thursdays are typical office days to catch up on new leads and existing clients. Tuesdays & Wednesdays are reserved for creative design and meetings with vendors and networking luncheons. I firmly believe a planner is only as great as her resources.
How did you get started in the industry?
My career as a wedding/event designer began in 2003, as an intern for a local wedding planner. I was working a full time job for an insurance agency and looking for a career change that allowed creative and corporate worlds to collide. Since I was always the “go to girl” for planning the social gatherings for work and for family and friends, weddings seemed to be the next best fit. And from that moment on, I knew that I wanted to become a wedding planner. Fast forward two semesters of floral design at the local community college, a few courses in business management, countless hours of devouring wedding magazines from cover to cover, and Tulsa Weddings and Design was established in 2005.
Where do you find design inspiration?
I’m often asked where my design inspiration comes from. As silly as it may sound, I think the best inspiration comes from my clients. I like to sit down with my clients and hear their story. I always leave those meetings feeling inspired and look for ways to personalize their event from the stories they share. Naturally, fashion and interior design magazines play a big part in my inspiration. I love reading blogs and following other designers in the market. I’m always seeking inspiration and will often take pictures of things that are simply fabulous. I find it never hurts to save a few great ideas for wedding show displays or style shoots for magazines.
What are your favorite online resources for your business?
I love that my career has allowed me to meet amazing couples, share in the love stories of two families becoming one, to be creative and to collaborate with clients and vendors who have the same goal in mind. I am thankful for the support of my family, friends, and my wonderful team who listens to me gush about the details, scream about logistics, and helps me fulfill the client’s vision!
