15 Things I Wish I Knew When I Started

  1. Teresa Gray says:

#9 for me. My first wedding was almost my last because that is how bad the bride and her mother-in-law got to me. The bride came in the day before the wedding as if I never existed. The mother-in-law made racial remarks towards me. It was one of those moments where I had to remain professional. The wedding was a year ago and it still bothers me. Although the event turned out beautiful and no issues, the bride and groom left drunk, thanking the DJ and not me. Other guest came up to me, giving me hugs and compliments about how beautiful everything was. It really takes a lot to be a wedding/event planner.

Thx, look fwd to your reply.

  3. This was such a “homerun” type of post. Number 9 literally reminds me everyday of the client I will never cater to again- definitely lesson learned. And #14 I feel that way all the time. mother of three can be overwhelming, but planning an event and working all day is a piece of cake. I guess sometimes the unappreciative/ unpaid jobs seems more stressful.

  4. An add on to #7 for me: Knew I worked hard the day of, but never knew just how hard I worked on the wedding day until I did it 7 months pregnant. And that was trying to take it easy!

  5. Hi Debbie,

This is such a helpful blog! Thank you for putting it together 🙂 I have a question for you as you mentioned the great importance of understanding SEO. We’re currently having our site re-done/recoded, but can you give me some pointers as to some of the best resources to learn SEO myself? Thanks so much for your help!

  9. These are great points. Number 9 is a biggie for me. While I haven’t had any crazies, I try to really align myself with the right clients to avoid running into sticky situations. And, it’s amazing how much you grow – you are so right!
