Keep Calm and Plan On
Chances are many of you have experienced that moment when you are standing at a wedding being pulled in 12 different directions while trying to make sure the ceremony begins on time, and feel yourself transforming into Planner-zilla.
Fear not, there is a way to remain calm and keep all catastrophes away. You are the single person at a wedding who is expected to keep a smile on at all times and give off the impression that everything is running smoothly, even when it’s not. It is important to remember that, although you may feel like you have to be talking to everyone and be in many places at once, the reality is that you cannot be everywhere. You have to prioritize.
Prior to the ceremony and reception, make sure you know the timeline of events and who is involved each step of the way, from the bride and groom, down to the harpist because it is up to you to make sure everyone is where they should be.
Another key to a successful event is to know any combination of people that could lead to a disaster. For example, if Aunt Mildred and Uncle Ned will immediately throw fists up if they are within 5 feet of one another, make a note of that and be sure that their seats are far enough away from each other at all times.
Aside from the guests, you also need to stay on top of the vendors. Communicate. Double-check drop off and pick-up times with all vendors and make sure that you have their contact information and vice versa in case any delays or issues arise.
The most vital detail to remember is that there will be unexpected issues that come up in every event, whether it’s a best man who had too much to drink, a crying flower girl, wilted flowers or misplaced rings – your job is to be ready with a Plan B to either fix the situation or divert the attention to something else while you assess and remedy what has happened. If you can keep your cool and not let on that anything is not going according to plan, chances are you will be able to make everyone else feel better and at the end of the night be able to say that the event went off without a hitch (even if you know better!).
