When and why did you decide to start a wedding planning business?
I created my business 5 years ago. Prior to starting my own business, I began to grow unhappy with my corporate job. Thus, I took some time to uncover my passion. As I reflected on when I was happiest, it was when I planned events. All of my previous corporate jobs involved me also planning events, which were not within my job description. This was just something I did because I loved it. Thus, I took 2 years and researched the event industry, the Denver metro market, pricing structures and what service/niche I would provide. I also created a one, two, five, ten year, and beyond business plan. Most importantly, I focused on creating a brand rather than a business.
There is a big difference between a brand and a business. I wanted to create an experience from start to finish for my clients. That experience began with creating a clear vision… “Our vision is to provide our clients with professionalism, keen organization, event design knowledge, seamless coordination, and timely responses”. Within that vision, I designed a marketing strategy around my ideal client that would embrace this brand.
What was your previous career or work experience before starting your business?
I taught middle and high school English literature for seven years. I also was in business development for an oil and gas company for another seven years after teaching.
What advantages do you have over younger wedding planners?
I do not consider my age or anything an advantage or disadvantage. I try to focus on what skills and talent I have to offer and let that present my brand. The attributes that I want to continue to guide my business decisions are my love and respect for people, life experience and passion for what I do.
Does your age present any disadvantages in our industry?
Not from my perspective. If anything, I try to be extra vigilant because of my age to ensure I keep up with new trends and technology. I want my clients to see the constant innovation (not recreating the wheel approach) within the service and resources that I provide. Recently, a corporate clients’ board member assumed I was a millennial because of the innovative ideas and resources I provided. I had the biggest LOL moment.
What are you most proud of in your life/career?
When I created my brand, the thought never occurred to me to work for another company, I was singularly focused. I wanted to create a brand/business I could be proud of. I never let fear or other’s comments hinder me from living my life with NO REGRETS!
What advice would you give to someone over the age of 40 who is considering starting an event planning business?
As you embark into your 40’s, you really begin to come into your own. I believe you have a greater sense of who you are and what you want out of life. Let that knowledge guide you into the creation of your brand/company. Make sure you also spend the necessary time developing your ideal client and what that looks like for you. Life is too short to create a brand that attracts clients that will only frustrate you as you go for what you want out of life. Do not be afraid to say NO THANK YOU to potential clients in whatever way that works for you.
Is there anything else you would like to share about yourself or your business?
When I created my brand, I built it to last. This is what I want for the rest of my life. I enjoy what I do and the most rewarding thing is that my clients, family and friends see my passion everyday of my life.
