Cool Doesn’t Always Pay the Bills
In a creative world, there is always pressure across industries to be innovative. Often times we glorify those brands that are on the cutting edge, however being the “coolest business” doesn’t always translate to being a profitable business.
There is often a large gap between what an industry internally deems to be the next best thing and what the consumer actually wants (and will pay for). I first discovered this while working at a clothing store in college. What came down the runway and what people actually bought were two very different things. Building a smart, profitable wedding business is a balance between creativity and consumer demand.
In the wedding industry, we still see clients ask for the same thing over and over (and over) again. As much as you may want to push the envelope, there are fewer clients (read: fewer dollars) willing to take big creative risks, especially on their wedding day. So as much as you may want to focus on creating daring design, make sure to not alienate your core client. A stable business will not only have a longer lifetime, but eventually it will allow for slow and steady innovation.
This is a guest post from Jess Levin Conroy. Jess is a native of Laguna Beach, CA. Jess attended the University of Pennsylvania following which she began her career at Burch Creative Capital, where she helped manage investments and brand development for a portfolio that includes C. Wonder and Tory Burch, LLC. After earning her MBA at NYU’s Stern School of Business, Jess saw an opportunity in the wedding space to help empower the businesses at the top end of the market. She founded Carats & Cake in 2013 in New York City. Find more business advice from Jess on her Tumblr blog.
